Coffee Story:  KAMWANGI is one of two factories run by New Ngariama Cooperative Society in Kirinyaga county. Kirinyaga, on the slopes of Mount Kenya, is world renowned for its amazing coffee quality.

Established in 1983, Kamwangi has around 500 (individual farm) members who deliver coffee each season. Farms have on average of 3–5 hectares of coffee (around 1,500–2,000 trees) planted at 1,550–1,650 meters above sea level. The main varieties grown in this region are SL28 and SL34, accounting for 95% of all coffee produced. The region’s high altitude allows coffee fruit to mature slowly. Combine this with rich volcanic soil and careful processing and the inherent complex fruit flavours from the SL28 and SL34 varieties are highlighted. Both cultivars have Bourbon and Moka heritage and are named after Scott Laboratories that promoted their wider distribution in Kenya during the early 20th Century.
In addition to the SL28 and SL34, this lot contains around 5% of the Ruiru 11 variety. Ruiru 11 is slowly becoming more widespread due to its resistance to Coffee Berry Disease and Coffee Leaf Rust and has been backcrossed with SL28 and SL34 to ensure high cup quality.
